Dr. Kathleen Pritchard, Division Director Welcome to the website of the Division of Medical Oncology in the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto. Medical Oncology is a dynamic and rapidly evolving specialty that provides a wide range of opportunities in research, teaching and creative professional activity. While one of the newest subspecialties within the Department of Medicine, it has quickly expanded and with 60 members is now one of the larger divisions within the Department. Over 50% of the Division members have university job descriptions as clinical investigator reflective of the central role that clinical research plays in cancer care.
Key features of the Division are the Medical Oncology Training Program (MOTP) and the Fellowship opportunities. The University of Toronto is the largest of the 13 accredited training programs in Medical Oncology in Canada, and under the leadership of Dr. Scott Berry, has been growing in popularity in recent years. In 2010 we had over 20 applicants and 6 new trainees joined the MOTP in 2011. There are over 30 accredited postgraduate fellows working at Princess Margaret Hospital, the Odette Cancer Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital. We are fortunate to have outstanding teachers and researchers in the Division that are attracting the best and brightest trainees from across Canada. The program is dedicated to developing trainees for academic research positions as clinician scientists and clinical investigators and we are seeing great results as their work is recognized at international meetings. At the June 2011 meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), there were in total 102 merit awards given to physicians in training throughout the world who submitted high quality abstracts to the meeting. Of these, 7 were awarded to University of Toronto trainees with 3 being awarded to trainees or recent graduates of the subspecialty program in Medical Oncology, and an additional 6 to physicians participating in fellowship training in the University of Toronto system. This website is an important communication tool for local faculty, alumni and trainees. On behalf of the Division I would like to encourage you to stay in touch and to assist in providing material to ensure that the website is both current and informative.
